Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) 2015

The Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract the best brain from around the world to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. Eligibility:

Czech Republic Government Scholarships 2015 for Foreign Students

Applications are invited for Czech Republic Government scholarships available for foreign university/college students or graduates and PhD candidates. Scholarship-holders may be admitted for research visits (i.e. either attending non-degree courses of their choice, or pursuing an independent research activity, depending on their qualifications and preferences) or for study visits at one of the Czech public institutions of higher education. Nominations and application dossiers must be submitted to the Ministry by the competent authorities of eligible countries. Applications sent directly to the Ministry by individual applicants will not be processed.

Eligibility:

• Scholarship-holders may be admitted for research visits (i.e. either attending non-degree courses of their choice, or pursuing an independent research activity, depending on their qualifications and preferences), or for study visits, when they enroll in a standard study program for the period of scholarship specified in the appropriate intergovernmental/departmental agreement. Since the courses they follow in the Czech Republic do not lead to the award of a degree, the universities concerned usually do not require them to sit entrance examinations.
• The terms and conditions of admission and requirements concerning the language of tuition are stipulated by the host university that takes an autonomous decision whether or not the applicant can be accepted within the framework of the Ministry’s scholarship program.
• Prospective applicants are advised to contact the selected university directly and request a letter of invitation from the appropriate department. Although such a letter is not listed among obligatory attachments to the application form, its submission is recommended, since it may simplify and expedite the admission procedure. Applicants are requested to point out to the selected university that they are applying for the Ministry’s scholarship award under an international agreement.
• Note please that access to art academies can be somewhat limited because the applicants must meet demanding requirements and demonstrate their talent. Samples of artistic work, e.g. photographs, video/audio recording of a musical performance etc., must be attached to the application forms of fine/performing arts students/graduates.
• All applicants should indicate the preferred period of scholarship in their application form. The Ministry reserves the right to change the requested term of scholarship and/or place any applicant to a course and/or higher education institution different from those indicated in his/her scholarship application form, if admission as requested by the applicant is not feasible.

Cost:

• For the academic year 2015/2016, the scholarship amounts to CZK 9,000 per month for those who do not hold a Master’s degree or equivalent and CZK 9,500 per month for holders of a Master’s degree or equivalent. Scholarship-holders are exempted from tuition fees. The scholarship has to be collected in person at the appropriate department of the respective Czech university. Inexpensive accommodation at student dormitories is offered as well as the possibility to take meals at student catering facilities. The applicants are requested to indicate in their application form whether they wish to obtain lodging at a student dormitory.
• Medical care: Medical care for EU/EEA citizens who are properly insured in their home countries is provided in compliance with the European Parliament and Council (EC) Regulation No. 883/2004, as last amended, and its implementing Regulation No. 987/2009, as amended by Regulation No. 465/2012. Note please that the expenses for repatriation are not covered by the provisions of the aforementioned European Regulations and it is therefore advisable to contract an insurance policy to this end. As regards non-EU/EEA citizens, medical care is provided to the extent stipulated in the respective intergovernmental/departmental agreement under which the scholarship is awarded. If the agreement concerned does not provide for any coverage of medical care, the admitted applicants are required to arrange a health insurance policy for the period of their stay in the Czech Republic. EUROPA (Jupiter's Satellites)

One of the most intriguing planetary bodies of interest astrobiologist is Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter. Europa is the smallest of Jupiter's Galilean and satellites. These are the four moons that were discovered, by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Europa is slightly smaller than our own moon, just over 300 kilometers in diameter. It orbits around Jupiter every three and a half days. The moon is tidally locked, and what that means is, one phase, it's always pointing towards Jupiter, on one hand, its surface is always pointing away. And it feels the gravitational effect of other moons, also Jupiter. These gravitational influences causes the moon to buckle as it's tidely distorted by these immense forces.

Most of what we know about Europa is from flyby missions. For example, Pioneer 10 and 11 in 1973 and 1974 took the first close-up images of Europa. And then in 1979, the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft destined to eventually leave the solar system, also took detailed images of the surface of Europa and saw an icy crusty surface and this prompted the first discussions on the possibility of a subsurface liquid ocean.

Galileo probe in 1995 took some of the closest to most detailed flyby photographs in the surface of Europa revealing some of its fine features, revealing cracks of fractures and chaotic terrains that have intrigued scientists . In 2007, the New Horizons probe that's destined to reach Pluto in 2014, also took images of the surface of Europa. These images taken by previous spacecraft have allowed to look at the surface and try and understand the composition of Europa and its internal structure. The surface of Europa is crisscrossed by dark lines.

It's a very bright surface and it has very few craters from asteroid and comet impacts, and this suggests that the surface of Europa is very young, at least relatively geologically. Young and constantly being resurfaced. What causes these barrens across the surface of Europa and one theory is that they're cased by warm ice rising up above the surface of the Europan crust and causing the crust to break apart and forming these lineations across the surface of Europa. Other chaotic terrains that look surprisingly like chunks, if you will, of icebergs moving around. Not quite in that way, but they suggest the surface of Europa is very young and is constantly being reformed. It's not known at the current time how thick the Europan ice shell is. It could be a few tens of kilometers. It could be hundreds of kilometers. Recent evidence suggest there may even be liquid water very near the surface of Europa.

The fractures that observed on the surface of Europa are probably created by the force of Jupiter pulling on Europa, its fast gravitational force. Expect the fractures to form a very predictable pattern if they were just very basic geological features from ice cracking, but they've become increasingly different from what would expect the older they are. And this would make, makes sense if the interior of the planet was rotating faster than the exterior. What that suggests therefore is that the core of Europa is detached from the icy surface and that might be by liquid water ocean.

There's other evidence for a water ocean as well. The saltiness in the ocean perturbs the magnetic field of Jupiter and this is evidence that's been picked up by studying Jupiter's magnetic field around Europa. This type of evidence also suggests that Europa has a salty ocean inside it.

The inside of Europa may have a metallic core, surrounded by a silicate mantle, a mantle essentially of rocks, and then, a liquid ocean over that core, and then finally, a solid icy crust on the surface, which is what we see with orbiting spacecraft.

The possibility of liquid water has made Europa one of the main targets for search extraterrestrial life and its possible that life inside Europa might look something like we observe in deep ocean beds, the bottom of the Earth's oceans.

Of course, Its unknown what the chemistry inside the Europan ocean and what the conditions are on the surface of that silicon core at the bottom of the oceans. There has been some controversial work suggesting that radiation hitting the icy surface of Europa could produce free oxygen which could seep down into the ocean, and some people have even speculated on the possibility of complex life inside the oceans of Europa feeding off this oxygen and gaining energy from the respiration of oxygen with other compounds. Well, all of these speculations are very interesting. They certainly fire the imagination of astrobiologists and the public alike. But need to know much more about the chemistry of the Europan ocean in order to assess the habitability of this plant. Future missions already been planned to take a closer look at Europa and Jupiter's other moons. The Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer, JUICE, which is being developed by the European Space Agency will explore Jupiter's moon and take a closer look at Europa.

Here is a fanciful image showing a possible mission to explore the oceans of Europa. In this case, the craft has melted its way through the Europan ice sheet and has sent out a small probe to explore the bottom of Europa's oceans. These, of course, would be extremely challenging missions to implement technically. But they show you some visions of the possible astrobiological future of the exploration of this fascinating moon.

Most of our knowledge of the moon is from flyby missions. The surface of Europe is young, it's icy and it's actively deforming. Europa gains its heat from tidal interactions that cause the buckling of the moon, generating heat and that's melting that ice in contribution to the formation of that deep Europan ocean. There may be a liquid water ocean under the ice and further investigation will determine if anything lives in this subsurface ocean.

So we can see that Europa is an example of a moon with the subsurface icy ocean of great interest astrobiologist and future exploration.

RSM non-EEA Scholarship of Excellence, Erasmus University, Netherlands

Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University offers scholarships for students from non-EEA countries who are not entitled to pay the EEA tuition fee, provided their grades are considered ‘excellent’. The scholarship will be provided in the form of a waiver from the non-EEA tuition fee.

For whom?
Application for the scholarship is open for prospective IBA students (thus, not currently enrolled students) starting their studies in 2015/2016 from all non-EEA countries, provided they would be charged the non-EEA tuition fee. The school may give preference to students with one of the following nationalities:

For which year?
The scholarship will be awarded for the first year of the IBA programme, provided excellence in previous education is proven. As the scholarship will only be awarded for the first year, students need to be aware that they will need to have sufficient means to cover the study costs of the second and third year.
Excellence
Excellence in previous education is proven if the grade point average achieved at secondary school (measured to date) is at least the equivalent of the Dutch grade of 8.0 on the Dutch grading scale 1 – 10. For prospective students who have also attended higher education after secondary education grades obtained in higher education will be considered as well. The RSM Scholarship Committee will decide on the local grade equivalents for the Dutch grade of 8.0 using (a.o.) the grade information included in the NUFFIC country modules.
When to apply?
You can apply for the scholarship at any time between 1 October 2014 and 1 March 2015.
How to apply?
When applying for the IBA programme in the online application form (OLAF) you will be asked to upload documents which will be used for evaluating your application. During this process you can also upload your scholarship application letter (maximum 1 A4 size page). The application letter should include the following information:

• an explanation why you would need a scholarship, comprising a description of your financial situation;
• an explanation why you would deserve a scholarship, comprising a description of academic excellence and if applicable other merits.
• if applicable: certified copies of other scholarships granted;
• a signed statement indicating that other scholarships awarded do not exceed the amount of 5,000 euro in total;

How does it work?
The scholarship takes the form of a waiver being the amount of money that will be subtracted from the full non-EEA tuition fee. The waiver fully covers the difference between the non-EEA tuition fee and the EEA tuition fee. You will always have to pay at least the statutory tuition fee. For the scholarship, no actual transmission of money takes place. The scholarship part of the non-EEA tuition fee will be subtracted from the full non-EEA tuition fee before the start of the academic year, enabling you to immediately pay the reduced tuition fee; either at once or in instalments.
The amount of the scholarship for the academic year 2015/2016 is approximately 6,500 euro.
Decisions
The decisions on the award of the scholarship will be made by the RSM Scholarship Committee. This scholarship committee will determine award recipient(s) on 1 April 2015.

Who is eligible?
You are eligible for this scholarship if you are an applicant seeking admission to The Nanyang MBA, (full time MBA programme only) at Nanyang Business School, NTU.
Eligibility criteria

Scholarships are offered to international students of outstanding ability from outside the European Union.

New in 2015, the Global Youth Leaders Certificate is a three-week education program offered at the Coady Institute. This program enables young development practitioners from developing countries to strengthen their leadership capacities in order to contribute to innovation and change in their organizations and communities. Participants engage in learning that is grounded in real-world experiences and focused on Coady’s core thematic areas. Eligibility:
